My interest in textiles begins with visual engagement. In many ways, appreciating a textile and appreciating a painting are not dissimilar.
These elements can be observed and analyzed in both mediums. And yet, a textile often brings to the conversation evidence of utility, and thus the user and context of use act as gateways to interpret history, culture, class and gender.
Though history informs a great deal of my research, my work is engaged with the contemporary relationship to everyday textiles. How do these pieces shape our experience, our understanding of ourselves, and additionally determine our projections of self to others? How can simple, everyday textiles such as t-shirts and quilts be such potent surrogates for the individual life and body?
